About The Artist
Julia Holderness is an artist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. In 2022, she completed a PhD project exploring the construction of art-historical narratives, with a particular focus on the histories of modernist women artists. In creating narratives that might or might not have existed, her research practice reflects on the role of fiction in both the collection and interpretation of material histories.
Holderness has staged a number of significant exhibition projects throughout Aotearoa, including The Studio at Dunedin Public Art Gallery (2021), The National (2022), and Schemes for Vibrant Living, her final PhD exhibition at Te Wai Ngutu Kākā Gallery, AUT, in 2022. Recent projects include Return to Villa Margaux for The National 2024, Botanical Pursuits at Sanderson (2024), and participation in the group exhibition Enmeshed: Feminist modes of information sharing at Ashburton Art Gallery (2024). She is also the recipient of the 2025 Zonta Ashburton Women's Art Award (ZAWAA).
