Hand Luggage Partnership

Sanderson were delighted to partner with Mickey Smith's Hand Luggage at the gallery's recent exhibitions launch.

Mickey Smith has been collecting contemporary jewellery since 1987, driven by a deep appreciation for unique, handmade, wearable works from around the world. As collector, maker and occasional metalsmith, her practice has led to longstanding relationships with exceptional jewellers from New York to Auckland to Paris.

Working directly with these makers, Mickey curates an annual collection of handmade works – available exclusively offline – through intimate gatherings focused on around connection, conversation, and collection.

For Janet Mazenier & Sarah Treadwell's Seatexts exhibition and for her own exhibition Sacrosanct, Mickey and the Sanderson team wore works by five Tāmaki Makaurau-based artists: Fran Allison, Mary Curtis, Mandy Flood, Hannah Sheehan and Mickey Smith.

“We need more ways to slow down, look one another in the eye, and connect. In a world of constant scrolling and spectacle, there’s something quietly radical about pausing, about holding a handmade object, hearing its story, feeling its weight against the skin. This kind of intimacy can’t be replicated online, and that’s what Hand Luggage is about – creating space for meaningful encounters with art, and with each other.”

– Mickey Smith, Artist, Curator & Founder of Hand Luggage

The Hand Luggage collection is currently showing in the US through 2026. Bookings for gatherings in Aotearoa available from January 2027
