Artificial Intelligence is part of Smith's ongoing series titled Volume (2022–2024), conceived as a long form documentary of bound periodicals and journals in public libraries. The books are not touched, artificially lit, or manipulated — rather created by the librarian and found in the stacks— positioned by the last reader. The focus is on simple, provocative titles that, through color and scale, transcend the spines on which they appear to create playful, anthropological, conceptual works.
Artificial Intelligence won the Molly Morpeth Merit Award in 2025. Reflecting on the work, the artist said: “Although I’d noticed this particular journal years before, AI did not demand my attention until 2024, and it wasn’t until my camera was on the tripod that ‘art intel’ revealed itself.”
Artificial Intelligence is currently featured in the exhibition Morphologies - a survey exhibition on view at The Arts House Trust until 24 May.
