Congratulations to Scott Cai on the acquisition of his work Hamer St (Red Mountain), 2024. The artwork was purchased as a special edition and is hung in the new Aorere Museum, Collingwood, Mohua Golden Bay, which opened to the public over the weekend on Friday 18th September 2026.
Cai is one of the youngest photographic artists featured, alongside Yvonne Todd, Conor Clarke, Robin Morrison, Ian MacDonald, Murray Hedwig, Anne Noble, Marti Friedlander and Lawrence Aberhardt, among other well-known photographers, in a room dedicated to the presentation of landscape photography in Aotearoa.
The Aorere Museum is a new museum of contemporary art bringing together a significant collection of international and local New Zealand art. The museum’s collection spans generations of artistic practice, creating conversations between established figures and contemporary voices, offering a new context in which to encounter Aotearoa’s contemporary art and visual culture, as well as offering a glimpse into contemporary art from abroad.
The collection features in a newly renovated 120 year old heritage building at the mouth of the Aorere River with stunning views to the ocean and mountains. Founded in 2026 by conservationist, photographer and teacher Craig Potton alongside community development advocate and teacher James Alker, the museum is the culmination of a long held dream that 'encounters with art and landscape can meaningfully shape the way we see, feel and live'.
It was a privilege to be there for the opening and to see Scott’s work presented within this remarkable new setting.
