Natalie Pryor’s wet-in-wet watercolours summon biomorphic forms from the womb and in-utero development. Flooding large cold-press paper with pigment for days or weeks, she lets evaporation dictate the resulting forms and meaning. As the water recedes, remaining pigments shape into dry-edged rinds, stained tidelines, and unpredictable bodies—at times soft and dream-heavy, but always on the edge of waking, bruising, or turning.

Recent shows include 2001 Portions – George Fraser Gallery Auckland, 2001 Banned Practice – Newcall Tower Building curated by Anthony Byrt, 2001 Defused – Toshiba Towers curated by Lisa Divett + Louise Poppelwell, 1999 Dish – Brava Restaurant Wellington, 1998 BarFlySpot – Valve Bar Wellington, 1995 Telecom Art Award – Finalist Northland Region. Pryor is currently studying at the Elam School of Fine Arts and works as a picture framer at El Framo in Tāmaki Makaurau.

From 2001, the artist goes on to have children, managing to paint occasionally whilst she is not parenting, working full time, slowly losing her sense of self, and becoming unhinged and unreasonable with lack of sleep and vision, in the thick of family life.
