Stephen Ellis selected as Dunedin School of Art Artist in Residence

Stephen Ellis has been selected as the Dunedin School of Art Artist in Residence for 2025.

This residency receives funding from the Fred Staub Open Art Fund and supports artists contributing to the Dunedin School of Art’s wider community. The residency is open to expressions of interest from national and Trans-Tasman artists by way of proposal. Ellis' proposal was shortlisted by a selection committee at the school of art in November 2024 and the artist will begin the residency on February 17th of this year.

Over the course of the residency Ellis will be deployed in Te Maru Pumanawa College of Creative Practice and Enterprise, within the Dunedin School of Art team, which is located at the Dunedin Campus.

Ellis was born in Ōtepoti Dunedin in 1957 and completed a Diploma of Fine and Applied Arts with Distinction at the Dunedin School of Art.

The artist is known for his meticulously rendered drawings which poetically engage with the materialisation of climate change. With a background in film, Ellis is known for his unique process where he builds dioramas, from which his compositions are derived.

Over the course of the residency Ellis will be working on a new body of work that will be showcased in his upcoming exhibition at Sanderson at the end of April 2025.
