Kate van der Drift completes Auckland Council Residency

Auckland Council selected photographer Kate van der Drift as the 2024 Artist in Residence, and she has just completed her residency at the Waitawa Regional Park.

The Auckland Council Artist in Residence programme has been running since 2008 and is an opportunity for artists to live and work in an Auckland regional park for eight weeks, while creating art to highlight the incredible and sometimes overlooked natural world around them.

A multi-disciplinary artist, van der Drift has a particular interest in recording and highlighting the relationship between humankind and our natural habitat through ecological studies of the land using analogue film processes.

During her residency van der Drift worked long hours capturing images using light from the sun and moon; engaging with the surrounding wetland to make underwater prints.

“The wetlands are dynamic, uncertain, and exciting places with important cultural, spiritual and ecological values,” van der Drift says.

The artist will be presenting a solo exhibition at Sanderson later in the year showcasing her work from the residency.
