Molly Timmins (Ngāpuhi, Pākehā, b.1998) is a painter based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Her work explores gardens as both an environmental physical place, and a painted subject throughout art history.
In Moon Sown, Timmins explores nocturne gardens that are alive under te marama (the moon). Pollination, growth, aroma and sounds are considered within each brushstroke, which are tended to like a gardener while allowing for moments that surrender to an embodied atmosphere.
In this series, Timmins explores her maternal connection to colonial gardens and bromeliad plants alongside her Māori whakapapa; creating a nuanced observation of what the “garden” can mean for herself and within Aotearoa today. Textured depictions of trees and plants sit alongside wild gestures of paint, and sewn thread - creating moments of familiarity that blend into new imagined surfaces.
