Sanderson are pleased to present the exhibition Transfiguration, a new suite of works by Julie Cromwell.

Julie Cromwell (b.1971, Leeds, UK) has been working with clay for many years, graduating from Derbyshire University with a major in Studio Ceramics, and later completing a Master of Fine Arts degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design.

Since 2001, Cromwell has taught, lived, and worked in Northland. The artist's practice is an ongoing exploration into how vessels can explore the histories of their physical form, as well as embody intangible qualities such as the sensual and ethereal. The transmutation of clay itself captivates the artist - the material moving through states from mud to clay, to form, through fire to permanence.

This new series of artworks presents a mixture of carbonised and non-carbonised pieces with an application of terra sigillata. The vessels present symbols that carry hidden meanings for the artist, drawing from age-old artifacts and influences from antiquities.

‘The humble vessel speaks of a visual language through form, and the act of adding low-lying relief builds upon the narrative; flat planes become textured, communicating messages in an alternative way.’ - Cromwell

Cromwell was the first-prize winner of the 2019 Glaister Ennor Graduate Art Awards and was selected as an exhibiting finalist in the 2023 Portage Ceramic Awards held at Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery. In 2022 Cromwell was featured in the internationally recognised publication Ceramic Review where she presented an article discussing her unusal 'crawl' glaze technique. Her works are held in private collections worldwide.
