Sally Barron is a painter based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Barron recently completed a Master’s degree in Fine Art at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design, and was artist in residence on the Isle of Wight, UK, in 2022.

Barron’s recent body of work is titled ‘Unfinished: Walking and Painting’. The artist works in oils, water-based mediums and collage.

Barron explores interconnectedness, emergence, and provisionality to interrogate the open-ended nature of painting. She approaches art-making as a fluid, metabolising process rather than a static or resolved state, examining the interplay between thought and material.

Barron likens painting to the meditative process of walking: like a ‘leisurely flaneur through the streets’. The artist states during her final year of completing her masters degree that she found a direct link between walking, movement and the developing nature of her art.

‘Walking sustains my practice, with daily observations shaping my approach to painting, keeping the work open and unfinished.’
