Artist Statement

We are used to thinking of forces of evolution and adaption shaping the biological world, and us as a species over geological time.

We forget that it hasn't stopped.

Trade has shaped our cultural and economic world.  The use of petrochemicals is reshaping our environment, our climate.  Our cultures and maybe ultimately our biology will need to re-adapt.

As the oceans acidify sea shells may not be able to form properly.

In the meatime we are ostriches, like the scallops - upside down in the sand.

These drawings come from pondering willow pattern china as an example of cross-cultural trade and globalisation, over a subconscious trying to reconcile continued use of disposable technology, with the imperative of change.
