One of the largest paintings executed by Ted Dutch in recent years, Festival City combines his trademark use of primary colours with expert paint application techniques and a superbly balanced composition. The detail of the city is sketchily inferred with elements such as the harbour scene at the centre right of the piece becoming apparent on closer inspection. The overall impression is that of a city at twilight - beginning to turn on its festival of lights while the daytime landscape can be just made out in the growing darkness. A piece of superb scale and confidence from one of New Zealand's leading artists, this work will be an asset in any collection.
