“It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to." Jean Luc-Goddard

Auckland based artist Teresa HR Lane is interested in reversing the male gaze, with a sense of humour and playfulness. Inspired by her godly Greek ancestry, interest in anatomy and gender issues as represented by the media, she confounds our expectations by dismembering and reassembling bodies to offer us an alternative vision. At times confronting, her collages document the ordinary and celebrates the extraordinary, whilst highlighting the often perverse ways we interact with others.

Lane received an MFA from Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland in 2017. Recent exhibitions include I’ve Hidden Your Knickers Under Here (where the boys won’t see) at Allpress Studio, Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards at Whakatāne Exhibition Centre, and Nevermind the Apocalypse at Paul Nache Gallery in Gisborne. Lane was the recipient of the Akel Schulte Runner-up Prize in the 2019 Molly Morpeth Canaday Painting and Drawing Award and is currently a finalist in the 2019 National Contemporary Art Awards. She was also a finalist in the 2017 Wallace Art Awards. Her work is included in the Wallace Arts Trust Collection and various private collections.
