The wall piece is complimentary to an ongoing series of street based works that have been attached to fences, posts and anything else that seems suitable for a painting that mimics signage. These works are the latest in a practice that has used the street as a primary site for the last 10 years and has most recently settled on a less is more approach in regards to proliferation. Where earlier works may have numbered in the hundreds per piece, this series is restricted to 15-20 of each different work.
These works address the role of signage and typographic communication in public space with a intimate approach that clearly sets them apart from the countless other ' authentic' examples of signage.
Havin Hard Times specifically is intended to reflect the commercial reality of operating as a full time artist and even more, the reality that the wider community is facing with the financial clenching and tightening of money flows. In any case it also trades on the individuals ability to apply their own life experience and circumstance to a phrase that rings true for most at some stage or another.
