Kaia Waite (Ngāpuhi, Ngāi Tahu) is a painter based in Pōneke Wellington, exploring the interplay of process, materiality, and ambiguity. Using a laser cutter, she intricately inscribes patterns into wood, blending traditional Māori motifs with contemporary techniques. Her work reinterprets and challenges cultural narratives, reflecting her evolving Māori identity. ‘Thus We Are Inheritors, Of Shimmering Dreams Echoing on the Wind' is a series of works that delve into the interplay between customary practices and my whakapapa, utilising contemporary materials and processes. The patterns within these works draw inspiration from the woven pattern found in my whānau korowai. Each square in the pattern represents a weave, symbolising the intricate and interconnected narratives of my ancestry.’
